Mesh Security aims to secure the Cosmos ecosystem while maintaining sovereignty for its chains by combining market caps with a new staking method.
Under the new shared security system, delegators on one chain can stake tokens to another “partner chain” to get staking rewards for helping secure that chain. This does take on increased risk as a partner chain could misbehave and a delegator’s tokens could be slashed.
Funding for Mesh Security is coming from the Atom Accelerator, Akash, Axelar and the Osmosis Foundation. The plan is to roll out the project in three phases over approximately nine months. Mesh Security will be a public good developed and maintained by teams across the Cosmos ecosystem, such as Juno developers Jake Hartnell, Ekez, Andre, Artimix and Reece Williams.
It appears Mesh Security and Interchain Security (ICS) will be complimentary to one another as they serve different use cases. A chain might start out utilizing ICS to grow and then transition to Mesh Security and continue to partially use ICS.

With replicated security launching on the Cosmos Hub we are beginning a period of innovative security development,” ATOM Accelerator Project Coordinator Ben Davis said. “Mesh security provides a new and exciting opportunity, opening the door to a new age of interchain cooperation. Mesh security and replicated security can operate in compliment to each other and we look forward to the Cosmos Hub making use of both.”
Time will tell how this all plays out, but with the full force of the Cosmos ecosystem behind this public good venture, the future of Cosmos is looking pretty secure.
